History
During the 1960’s, several train collectors in the Galveston area held an informal get-together every Monday night at the home of Henry & Leona Piel. They would run trains in Henry’s train room, swap stories and have a good time. Word of this got out among the few collectors in the Houston area, and they soon joined in the fun. When the Lone Star Division was formed, the members in the Houston-Galveston area thought forming an area Chapter would be in order since the Division only sponsored a few meets a year, and they wanted to get together more often. When the Division was given the option to form chapters in the early 1970’s, the Houston-Galveston collectors formed the Southern Chapter, which soon became the Gulf Coast Chapter. The first Chapter Train Meets were held at the homes of Henry & Leona Piel along with Richard & Wilma Hearn and Peyton & Ruth Randolph of Houston. Soon, other members wanted to host meets. Eventually it was decided to have meets only in the month’s that did not have a Division Meet. As it stands today, the Chapter holds eight train meets a year, each sponsored by, and at the homes of, Chapter members. Any non-member can attend a meeting for one time only as a guest of a member. If they wish to continue attending, they must join the TCA.
